Running
Running is a popular and vibrant activity in Bermuda indicated by the over 400 runners that regularly compete in the Marathon Derby. This is a May 24th Bermuda Day tradition for local runners only that is kinda confusing to visitors for two reasons: 1) it is pronounced Darby, not Derby and 2) it is almost a half-marathon of 13.4 miles, not a full marathon. This event has a storied tradition and the fan support is amazing....sorry, only open to residents but come cheer us on!
Training Runs
My favourite training runs are along the Railway trail, away from narrow roadways and traffic. Beginning in Paget near Horizons, there is an exceptional 4-mile stretch of Railway Trail but it can be tricky on your ankles. For a more consistent surface, try the entrance to the Trail beginning just past the Somerset Bridge. This asphalt surface will give you outstanding vistas of Hamilton Harbour and protection from wind.
In Hamilton, my normal 4 mile out-and-back lunchtime run begins at the Olympic Club on Dundonald Street and heads north on Cedar Avenue past Saltus. Take a right up Langton Hill and a half-mile later you will reach North Shore. Turn left on North Shore road and continue along until you hit Spanish Point Road at Admiralty House. Turn around and head back the same way which is slightly faster due to regular tailwinds.
Another favourite run is at Elbow Beach during somewhat cooler evenings - it's a 1/2 mile run from end-to-end and is an excellent way to get some speed work in. This can be a pain in the calf but is an excellent way to 1) avoid Bermuda's hills and 2) check out the scenery (natural and tourist!).
Visitors are always welcome to:
- Swan's Running Club's Monday evening training runs at 6:00pm on Horseshoe Bay Beach
- Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club's Tuesday fun runs at 6:00pm from the Botanical Gardens in the summertime, and National Stadium track workouts during the winter.
Racing
Due to the heat & humidity in summer, the running season generally runs (pun intended!) from October to late-May. The highlights of the season are the aforementioned Bermuda Day Marathon (May 24) and the Bank of Butterfield Mile, 10K, 1/2 Marathon & Marathon in January. I am pleased that I have qualified for the Mile race 2 times (after failing 2 previous times by about 5 seconds and 1.6 seconds). It is definitely a heart-wrenching and exciting experience running in front of thousands of spectators on Front Street.
In running season, there are normally events held most weekends. While in Bermuda, you can check in at Sportseller in Hamilton's Washington Mall for race dates and registration forms.
