QUALIFYING CRITERIA FOR BERMUDA REPRESENTATION IN TRIATHLON AND DUATHLON, INCLUDING FUNDING

 

Bermuda Exceptional Athlete Development Program

Any athlete aged 15+ who in the opinion of the BTA Executive shows exceptional potential that suggests that he/she may be capable of? competing effectively at World Championship or Olympic or Regional level ( Pan Am Games or equivalent ) be offered the opportunity to participate in an exceptional athlete development program designed to give the athlete as much assistance as possible to achieve these goals.

Criteria for Qualification

An athlete may be selected for this program if it is the opinion of the Executive that the athlete has the ability within five years to reach the following times on an average difficulty Olympic Distance Course.

Male : 1 hour 55 minutes

Female : 2 hours 08 minutes

Other criteria for Qualification

1.       The athlete undertakes to represent Bermuda in the calendar year at a World Championship or Regional Championship or Olympics.

2.       The athlete will be expected to sign a letter indicating their agreement to all the qualifying criteria

3.       The athlete focuses on the sport of triathlon and undertakes to maintain an advanced and carefully though out triathlon training program designed to take the athlete to the highest level of competition. Only athletes who show a true commitment to the sport of triathlon will be eligible for this exceptional athlete status.. The athlete?s training program must be built towards a major championship and should not be unduly compromised in order to meet goals in other sports such as cycling, swimming or running as separate individual disciplines. As cycling, swimming and running are the three disciplines that form triathlon, participation in individual races in each discipline will not in itself exclude an athlete from being eligible for the Exceptional Athlete program so long as this participation complements and forms part of the athlete?s triathlon training. At all times the athlete?s primary goal in sport should be " to maximize his /her potential as a triathlete".

4.       The athlete is responsible for providing regular progress reports to the Executive covering training and performance in overseas events.

5.       The athlete must submit to drug testing as required by the BTA or other authorities to which the BTA has voluntarily or by law submitted.

6.       Athletes must be Bermudian or have been continuously resident in Bermuda for the six month period prior to the race for which they wish to be considered.

7.       Without BTA approval the athlete may not seek separate personal corporate sponsorship on the basis that he/she is a member of this Exceptional Athlete program or a member of a Bermuda National Team but in general may seek ongoing individual sponsorship as a triathlete or duathlete.

8.       Except by BTA dispensation, when racing in major events the athlete must race in Bermuda National Team outfit. National Team outfits may only carry logos authorized by the BTA Executive.

9.       Athletes must be paid-up members of the BTA.

Funding

Bermuda National Team Uniform and Entry Fees to all races abroad will be paid plus an annual allowance of $750 towards travel expenses and accommodation

 

Bermuda National Team - Olympic Distance Races each year races will be selected by the Executive for Bermuda National Teams to attend. These races will include World Championship events.

Criteria for qualification

1.       An athlete must meet the qualifying times determined by the Executive at a race that is approved by the BTA Executive. It is recommended that athletes obtain prior approval for any races they are participating in in order to qualify2.       An athlete must complete a form showing the event(s) they wish to enter at least 4 months before the event(s). A detailed training schedule should be submitted with the form.3.       An athlete must submit to drug testing as required by the BTA or other authorities to which the BTA has voluntarily or by law submitted. 4.       Due to the size of the BTA, all athletes stating their intention to represent Bermuda must assist with fund raising events and demonstrate a commitment to the BTA by assisting at races and/or other functions. Where an athlete is not able to assist due to participation in a BTA race that athlete should find another person to assist at races in which he/she participates. The BTA Executive may refuse an athlete funding if he/she has not shown a reasonable commitment to the BTA. 5.       Attendance at team meetings is required, except in extenuating circumstances. 6.       Athletes must be Bermudian or have been continuously resident in Bermuda for the six month period prior to the race for which they wish to be considered. 7.       An athlete must agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the BTA appointed team manager and/or coach accompanying the team. The team manager and/or coach may take appropriate action if athletes fail to meet the requirements laid out or fail to exhibit good sportsmanship or break race rules. Appeals regarding penalties or disqualification etc in a race may only be made by the team manager and/or coach accompanying the team. 8.       Except by BTA dispensation, all athletes must race in Bermuda team outfit unless the team in only a BTA representative team (as opposed to a Bermuda National Team ). Bermuda National Team outfits may only carry logos authorized by the BTA Executive. 9.       Without BTA approval athletes may not seek separate personal corporate sponsorship on the basis that they are representing a Bermuda National Team but in general may seek ongoing individual sponsorship as a triathlete or duathlete. 10.   Athletes must be paid-up members of the BTA.

"B Qualifying time"

Entry fee and team uniform for the Worlds only will be paid ?by the BTA, . Bermuda National ? Team Sprint Distance

Race
Each year the BTA will identify an overseas high standard sprint distance race ( 750meters, 20km, 5km ) to which a BTA National Team will be sent as part of a junior development program. If at all possible, this event will be the Worlds.

Criteria for Qualification.

1.       To represent the Bermuda National Team, an athlete must meet the qualifying time as determined by the BTA at a race that is approved by the BTA Executive. The BTA Executive can make exceptions to this criteria if an athlete ?fails to qualify due to illness, injury or failure to complete a qualifying race due to mechanical or other difficulties. However, the athlete in question must have already demonstrated in the previous 18 months that they are easily capable of reaching the standard required and, at least one month prior to the race, must also demonstrate the fitness required to reach the qualifying time. 2.       At least 4 months prior to the event for which they wish to be considered, an athlete must state his/her wish to be considered for the event in question by completing a form which will include their proposed training schedule for the event over the 4 month period prior to the event. The BTA Executive can request the athlete to justify his/her training schedule and if still not satisfied that the training schedule is appropriate and/or adequate, the BTA Executive may request the athlete to modify his/her training schedule.3.       ?For the 4 month period prior to the event all athletes must submit ?a training log on a monthly basis. 4.       An athlete must submit to drug testing as required by the BTA or other authorities to which the BTA has voluntarily or by law submitted. 5.       Due to the size of the BTA, all athletes stating their intention to represent Bermuda must assist with fund raising events and demonstrate a commitment to the BTA by assisting at races and/or other functions. Where an athlete is not able to assist at a race due to participation in a BTA race that athlete should find another person to assist at races in which he/she participates. However, when juniors are accompanied by parents, the junior need only comply with the BTA appointed team manager and/or coach?s requirements and will not be under the direct supervision of the team manager/coach except when required at meetings, course reviews and during the race. The team manager and/or coach may take appropriate action if juniors fail to meet the requirements laid out or fail to exhibit good sportsmanship or break race rules. Any appeals regarding penalties or disqualifications etc imposed on athletes during the race can only be made by the team manger and/or coach. 9.       Except by BTA dispensation, all Bermuda National Team athletes must race in Bermuda team outfit 10.   Without BTA approval athletes may not seek separate personal corporate sponsorship on the basis that they are representing a Bermuda National Team or Bermuda Representative Team but in general may seek ongoing individual sponsorship as a triathlete or duathlete. 11.   Athletes must be paid-up members of the BTA.

General Notice for All Age Groups

1.Athletes who are not part of a Bermuda National Team should not hold themselves out, in particular to the press, as representing a Bermuda National Team. 2. Athletes who fail to meet the Qualifying Criteria to represent a Bermuda National Team may appeal in writing only to the BTA Executive.
