Swimming

The world's 2nd largest swimming pool, the Atlantic Ocean, is never more than 2 miles away from any spot in Bermuda. As a result, I should be a faster swimmer. Nevertheless, there are two primary locations for open water swim training:

Harrington Sound Public Dock

Located along Harrington Sound road in Smith's Parish, this is the best open water swimming spot in Bermuda. Starting at the dock, heading east to the point and back is 1/2 mile.  In th summer, you will find other triathletes training on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm and Saturdays at 4:00pm.  In the winter, wet-suit fanatics will be swimming here at 12:00noon.

Clearwater Beach

Another favourite site on the formal US Naval Baselands, Clearwater Beach is notable for being the site of most triathlons within Bermuda. As a result, when race time comes, you should be better-prepared with swim times much faster. Last spring while swim training at Clearwater, I noticed a creature moving at the bottom of the sea - a Green Sea Turtle. I swam with the turtle for about 10 minutes - a great experience which doesn't happen in a pool.

Pools

If you prefer chlorine in your eyes and hair, lines on the bottom of the pool, and flipping around every 25m, visit the BASA pool at Saltus or Warwick Academy pool.  There are regular early-morning and lunchtime training sessions with coaching available.

Swim Events

Visitors are also encouraged to compete in the Pepperidge Farm Open Water Swimming Series which runs practically year-round at various sites around the island.  Race schedules are in the Events section..

Other annual swim events include the popular Trunk Island Swim (1375 meters) in August and the Round the Sound Swim-A-Thon (2k, 4k, 10k!) in early-September. The Huw Morris Memorial Duathlon (1.25 mile run, 1.5 mile swim, 1.25 mile run) is held at Horseshoe Bay in early-July.
